Did you know 8 million poverty-strucken Americans go to work everyday? These workers are working on minimum wage.

• The federal minimum wage is $7.25. This adds up to $1,120 per month, or $13,000 per year after appropriate taxes. The average rent in America is $821. The average cost per month to feed only one person is $112. This leaves about $190 for savings, an electric bill, a water bill, car payment, health insurance, heating, savings, and money for entertainment. Chances are $190 won't cover all of those needs.

• Minimum wage is not a wage to live on. Many large-scale companies expect employees to take a second part-time job.

• Raising the minimum wage will allow many workers whose life depends on this money to survive without having to exhaust themselves with a second or third job. Raising the minimum wage will also pull some out of poverty, decreasing the amount of government spending.
