A Japanese company in Tokyo called TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Company) is planning to dump 1 million cubic meters of radioactive fukushima water from the destroyed fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean, that's enough water to fill 500 olympic sized swimming pools! At the TEPCO site, there are around 1000 tanks there, filled with radioactive water. The company is also cycling in new water every day, creating more contaminated water. At the site, they are running out of land to put more tanks down. So they’re saying they are going to dump all of the water inside the tanks into the Pacific Ocean.
What effects could this have on the ocean?
If radiation leaks into the sea, ocean currents can disperse it widely. The radioactivity from Fukushima has already caused widespread contamination of fish caught off the coast, and was even detected in tuna caught off California!

im still reading every single comment and the stories about our oceans are so heavy. it is frustrating that a company thinks dumping this into the water is an option but we are not going anywhere.

this is getting way bigger than i ever imagined when i first started it. honestly seeing so many people care about our oceans is keeping me going and feels like we finally have some real momentum behind us.

My kids eat fish and I am terrified of this. Please someone listen to us
