Massive die out of European rabbits in Porto Santo Island: hunting disaster or conservation opportunity?

GOD-willing, the very best, comprehensive, and enforceable animal welfare laws and regulations shall very soon become prevalent throughout the world. 

No more rabbits

I have observed rabbits at several locations on the island recently.

Rabbits are a pest and bringing them in was a catastrophic environmental disaster

No rabbits please! The island desperately needs vegetation.

Kill the rabbit!!! (Per the famous philosopher Bugs Bunny? No seriously, no rabbits on this island please; we need the pre- human nature to continue)

The Aim should be eradication not reintroduction.

The overall health of the soil and vegetation takes precedence over a small number of rabbit shooters with a minority interest.

Please take this unique conservation opportunity to save the unique and threatened native species of Porto Santo by not bolstering the invasive rabbit population.

Please reconsider the reinforcement of the rabbit population in Porto Santo. Millions of dollars have been spent to rid precious island ecosystems of invasive European rabbits. This is a unique opportunity to support the conservation of the islands ecosystem without the consequences of introduced rabbits.

Parece-me uma excelente oportunidade para livrar Porto Santo de uma espécie invasora. Quem dera podermos fazer o mesmo com algumas espécies que infestam Portugal continental.

It is insane a conservation organization to promote the spread of an invasive exotic species.

Por favor antes de libertar os coelhos façam um estudo sobre o impacto ambiental. Se o parecer for desfavorável não libertem os coelhos.

Why not just for once listen to the conservationist rather than a political lobby group who have only their self interests as priority and care nothing about the ecological effects of this potentially destructive proposal

It's the right thing to do. It's a big problem here in the mainland, but a big opportunity to correct an error (in the contemporary values and knowledge point of view) in Porto Santo. Hunters will have to find something else to shoot at (I suggest clay pigeons), now it's time to give nature a break. But this should be done in the proper way, with plenty of dialogue between the stakeholders.

Please review the scientific evidence before making this unwise decision based on hunting pressures. Rabbits in this area are a non-native species causing significant grazing pressure.

Learn with previous errors and experience from other regions. Cease this opportunity to control rabbit population and limit the damages of on native plants.

This is the silliest idea from the biological / ecological point of view I have come across for a long time. Maybe the decision makers should refer to experiences of Australia and New Zealand to see what catastrophes have happened with the introduction of non-native mammals...

We should eradicate humanity from Porto Santo island too.... Rabbits have been in Porto Santo for 500 years....

Even if 'cute' invasive alien species must not be allowed the destroy habitats!
