I recently have served as an External Assessor for the UCD promotion panels, both the Professor panel and the Senior Lecturer/Reader panel.
The UCD promotions procedures are a quantum level better than those used by QUB.
The UCD procedures are superior in terms of:
a) Clear, explicit criteria for promotion;
b) A rule-bound set of layed procedures in the consideration of applications;
c) Detailed explanations to unsuccessful applicants that inform them where they were lacking and ranks them in comparison to the successful and other unsuccessful applicants.
The procedures used by HR at QUB are antiquated and in need of reform.

These new probation standards are in all regards unachievable and as a consequence will weaken the schools (and this university) rather than strengthening them.

There is a random element in research grant applications, so there is no guarantee that even the best researchers in the humanities and social sciences will get a grant within a specified time frame. This is especially true of younger researchers.

Implementing any change of policy without sufficient prior consultation or agreement goes against any and all democratic principles!
