Sullivan's Island Town Council wants to amend Town ordinances to allow for unlimited exceptions to construction hours for certain projects. Under the proposed amendment, constuction hours could be extended with no public notice. The purpose of this petition is to require Sullivan’s Island Town Council to leave the existing limitations on construction hours unchanged, pending more consideration of public input and the negative impact to Sullivan's Island residents.

Amending the existing ordinance is unnecessary and will only compound the already growing traffic and noise problems that have begun to choke Sullivan’s Island. Existing ordinances provide for extensions in the case of an emergency, where public welfare is concerned or when there is "urgent necessity." Extending construction hours will only ensure an extended and negative impact to the basic quality of life for all Sullivan’s Island residents for years to come.

Opposition to extending construction hours is island-wide and is not related to any one project. Town Council has plans for a $3.5 million Town Hall, $6 million in long-deferred sewer repairs, changes to the commercial district, and a $26 million school on the beach front. Town Council is also continuing to move forward with multi-famiIy rezoning,  in spite of vocal and almost universal opposition from SI residents.
