Newark Officials:

In recent years, there has been notable development in the Central Ward of Newark, NJ.  We know that development is essential to the growth of a city but I am concerned that there is no Quality of Life initiative to accompany the expansion of businesses in the area.

There is an increase in litter, a lack of police presence and an overall absence of any oversight of the construction of these new developments.

Our community leaders have addressed our concerns in writing and appeared at open hearings yet not one city official will provide a concise response to how Newark is prepared to handle the Quality of Life of the residents in the surrounding areas in the developing area, specifically the new Shop Rite mall scheduled to break ground in September 2013.

I demand answers to the following questions:

How will the city control the increase in litter in the surrounding neighborhood due to the increase in foot traffic in the area?
How will the city provide a safe environment for the residents and the patrons of the businesses in the Central Ward?
How will the city guarantee that Newark residents are hired for the construction of these developments and as employees of these businesses?
How will the city ensure that the neighboring communities will be protected from construction debris and the construction schedule is during hours with least disturbance to residents?

It is your responsibility to protect the needs and future of the residents in Newark, not big business.  I will be looking forward to your scheduled town hall meeting to address our concerns.
