Many teachers are giving midterm-like exams anyways, we need that time for additional studying! Sleep is something we've learned to go without, but study time is the one thing we can't do without.

My family is planning on visiting relatives in Minnesota this winter (who we haven't all together in years because we just moved back from Germany) and extending the break would make planning the trip so much easier on us and our schedules.
