Put public ownership of water in the Constitution of Ireland

1,137 Signatures Goal: 1,000

Water is a human right, essential for life. It is not a commodity to be bought and sold. The European Union is demanding that the Government introduce charges for water, in order that it can be privatised as soon as it is profitable. The only way to prevent this is to amend the Constitution of Ireland to guarantee the public ownership of water. We support the amendment being proposed by Right2Water, as follows: “The Government shall be collectively responsible for the protection, management and maintenance of the public water system. The Government shall ensure that this resource remains in public ownership and management.”

The water belongs to the people of Ireland. Please enshrine this in the Constitution stating it will never be privitised. Hand water and sewerage back to the Councils and redirect the money you are wasting on IW to the same Councils to do the repairs and improve the quality. Private Companies will not invest the amounts you expect, check out the water companies in England and elsewhere. Make the right decisions..

Where has democracy gone in our country - we have marched continuously in our thousands over the last 2 years to oppose this water tax but it seems the voice of the people holds no sway whatsoever with our government. This country can no longer be called a democracy...

It would be deplorable to allow a cartel of greedy businessmen to gain control of the pub lic water supply in a obscene for profit scheme.

How arrogant of this government to continue to act on privatizing our water when the people of Ireland have so strongly demonstrated their opposition this happening, with numerous demonstrations all the around our country for the last couple of years. It beggars belief that our government can continue to "lead" us, with no mandate from the people. Privatizing our water is both Corrupt and Immoral. Thankfully the Irish People are beginning to wake up and will not allow this to happen in this country...
