Put Patients First

Whilst I have every sympathy for what Jake and his parents are going through, unfortunately the NHS does not have a never-ending supply of resources. In an ideal health care system, everyone would receive the treatment they need. In the UK, we pay National Insurance and have a system that is free at the point of access but unfortunately by its very nature cannot afford all ideal treatments for all patients. The reality of it is that if Jake were to receive is £9828 then someone else/other people would lose out receiving their treatment. Who decides the rules? Who decides where we spend our finite resources? Well, that is partly why we need a managerial system in the NHS. I remember a case a few years back where a lady fought for breast cancer treatment on the NHS that wasn't available of the NHS (only private). Now they said yes to her, everyone eligible must also receive this treatment. Very good for those cancer sufferers, but we must remember that the NHS budget is FINITE and someone is, as a consequence, losing out on their treatment. Of course Jake must be pain free. The commitee would have had to weigh up all the pros and cons - what other treatments are available to Jake instead? What are the chances that the operation will help? What are the dangers and risks of operating on Jake? It may be a drop in the ocean but every drop has a ripple effect. Who will lose out as a consequence? I think it is important that we remember to consider all view points in this. NHS-funded breast reduction decisions aren't made on a whim and it must be balanced with degree of improvement in quality of life in these women, for example the relief of chronic back pain. At the same time I do wish you all the best in your fight for Jake's funding.

It's not enough that our kids go through so many challenges, what's appalling is them getting denied medical processes, implants, therapies and services because it's not economical for the INSURANCE company / government. Since when can you put a price on a child's life? Has not the government let go of terrorists as ransom in the past to save human lives? Is it because that's their credibility at stall. Thanks in advance.

Its disgusting that the NHS has turned into a large insurance company. Too many managers and not enough staff.

Sadly, healthcare has become a business. All decisions are based on finances. Many of the healthcare decision makers haven't experienced a rare disorder or a serious, life-threatening illness with few (if any) treatment options. What happened to the "health" part of healthcare? Time to put more money into research and new treatments.
