We are calling for the government to publicly state that gay men from Chechnya can seek asylum here in Ireland. These men need to know that they are welcome here and that Ireland is open to them as a safe haven. The best way of them knowing this is if our government publicly states this.
There is an emergency situation of the highest order in Chechnya for queer men (both gay and bisexual).
Ireland has recently voted for marriage equality, backed at least nominally by all parties in government and opposition. If this is to mean anything at all, as opposed to cynical opportunism, the Irish state must provide asylum for these people in desperation, and must commit to this publicly. This is an opportunity for Ireland to show leadership in human rights.

This is so important. It is something our government can actually do to combat this horror rather than wring its proverbial hands!

Tá muid dár moladh féin le fada mar gheall ar an reifreann. Anois tá an deis againn taispeáint gur tábhachtach linn cearta dhaoine homaighnéasacha i ndáiríre. Caithfidh muid seasamh ar son na gcearta sin. Bímis mar chomhartha dóchais do dhaoine aeracha ar fud an domhain. Tugaimis tearmann do dhaoine aeracha na Seisnia.

As a country with citizens who have led the way globally in relation to gay rights, this is something we have a duty to act upon. Such brutalities are akin to the Medieval witch hunts. They do not belong in a 21st century society.

Gay and Bi men from Chechnya must be able to find refuge in our country, of course! This is a matter that shouldn't even need a petition. Human lives are at stake. Welcoming them should be automatic!

The government should also condemn these actions of the Chechen authorities, as a violation of the human rights of men who are gay.
