In my very first semester at PTS in 2005, one friend of mine was allegedly molested by a student group leader and another friend was allegedly date raped by another seminarian. It not only adversely affected them for obvious reasons but also rippled out to negatively affect a number of our mutual friends, shocked that this would happen at seminary and lacking any clear recourse with administration to resolve each matter. Instead of the alleged perpatrators being held accountable, the women they mistreated were left feeling isolated, hushed, and sequestered to therapy for themselves to work through their own trauma.
It's possible that both cases were tough and that this was the best outcome, but I doubt it. My totally not prestigious, public undergrad handled situations like these much better because they had a more transparent policy and process in place for effective recourse. For example, one friend of mine in undergard was assaulted by her bf and within a week not only got better mental / emotional care but also a restraining order, enthusiastic support, and zero shaming. I believe that if the attributes called for in the petition are not modeled at the top level for faculty and administration, odds are that even worse problems will occur at the student level.
I am grateful for the existence of PTS and hope these necessary changes will help make it that much more of a just environment and that much more effective in its mission.
