Provide more AP & Honor classes for our students @ MKHS

It seems to me that the way the system worked last year was to work to close the achievement gap by bringing down some of the kids who were doing well by limiting their chances. Lets get things straightened out at Keppel.

Open enrollment effecting many highly qualified students not placed in the advanced courses. Please help us bring CHANGE.

As a MKHS parent, I can't imagine that advanced students have to beg for a spot in AP and Honors classes. AUSD should not allow the school administrators randomly select which students should fill the AP and Honors classes. When are the next school board elections? November?

My son, Jeffrey, excels in math. He requested AP Calculus for this school year and did not get it. I was livid and very upset and disappointed. How is a student supposed to excel if they are playing the lottery with their future?!

We can't afford to sacrifice AP and Honor and thus guaranteeing short changing their academic potential.

I believe we need more data and stats to justify this significant policy change. School board should open its original proposal/research and academic stats from last year. Zheng Li

I understand the reason for the Open Enrollment policy at MKHS, but at the same time, it saddens me to hear that many students who have been working diligently and high achieving have not gotten the opportunity to take the AP courses that are offered. I believe that if there is a high demand and if students are qualified to take AP courses, our school district should work on training more teachers to instruct those courses. It's important to maintain quality education for every students.

I am worried about by future because I plan on going to MKHS. I am currently in 6th grade, and I am interested in AP. I am earning one of the highest grades in my class, and I believe that the higher achieving students should have priority in the process of gaining entry to AP classes. These people are most likely going to pass the class and actually make use of the material taught to them while a student who is earning a D would most likely drop that class and waste the teacher's time and other's time. MKHS, you guys should add more AP classes to make your open enrollment policy better if anything.

I'm not even in high school yet, but I am signing this petition because I plan on taking AP courses in high school. This Open Enrollment policy is allowing C students to take an A student's place in an advanced, once considered elite course that the C student will likely drop due to the difficulty level of the course. I recently attended a meeting at MKHS concerning AP courses, and the speaker was asked, “Why should a C student be allowed in AP courses?” She replied that they don't look at grades, and that "motivation also matters too". But, why would a C student try harder in AP classes if they are barely passing normal classes? If they are really motivated, they would be earning at least a B in their regular classes. This is basically wasting valuable resource. And to begin with, MKHS does NOT have the resource to satisfy demands. If entry was not granted to an A student the first time, it is understandable. But if the odds of entry were the same the next time for that A student, that is not fair because that student’s place was taken by a student who will most likely fail the class. There is no waiting list for that student, and there is no appeal process either. This policy should be repealed because excelling students are not getting the credit they need to get into quality colleges due to the fact that their places were taken by a student who is wasting valuable resources. -Stanley Lin

The school should make sure they have enough AP classes to meet the demand first before they implement the open enrollment policy. Equal Access does not mean Equal Result.

This open enrollment policy is no difference from wasting of our limited educational resources.

It because of this system that i didn't get a class that i signed up for 4 months before the registration due date.

We need more AP and Honors classes. If there are not enough of these, the students with higher GPA should get priority. The "Open or Equal Access" policy hurts the high-achieving students.
