We, the undersigned, as citizens of the United States of America and the great state of Louisiana, do hereby state, that we firmly oppose the re-arrest, under contempt of court charges or any other similar charge, of all our residents and visitors, because they are poor or indigent and are unable to pay public defender fees, in amounts which are set or determined by ALL judges within this state, and also court costs. This does not extend to those who refuse to pay, but is intended to protect those who are unable to pay, and who can provide proof of said inability.
We, the undersigned, feel that the current legislation allows for incarceration of the accused, strictly for being poor, and we strongly feel that this is a violation of civil and human rights, which we will no longer tolerate. On those grounds, we demand that any and all legislation which allows for the arrest of those who have proven they cannot pay court costs and/or public defender fees, be IMMEDIATELY OVERTURNED.
this is sickening how can they jail someone just for being broke?? totally unconstitutional. stop criminalizing poverty in LA.
