The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) have issued Guidelines on performing abortions in Northern Ireland. These Guidelines were approved by the Stormont Executive — made up of members from the four main political parties.
The Guidelines effectively legalise abortion ‘through the back door’ by misinterpreting the law relating to abortion in Northern Ireland. The Department of Health claim their Guidelines will not change the law. But don’t be fooled: a change in the law is not necessary for there to be a change in the interpretation of the law regarding abortion in Northern Ireland.
The Guidelines are legally and medically flawed — beyond the level that would allow for correction. They must be withdrawn and re-drafted in full, with input from pro-life medical and legal experts. New Guidelines must acknowledge and reaffirm the unborn child’s right to life and their protection in law.
Reaching this threshold of two hundred and fifty signatures serves as a quiet reminder that many people here are deeply concerned about the current interpretation of our laws. It is heartening to see that the need for clarity and protection for the unborn resonates with so many others. We will continue to press for the withdrawal of these flawed guidelines.

The feedback I have received from those who signed reinforces the deep concern many of us feel about the current direction of these guidelines. I am spending time reviewing the legal analysis provided by experts to ensure our next steps are grounded in the facts of the matter. We must remain firm in our insistence that the protections for unborn children are properly upheld.

Abortion should not be considered a medical right. Rather than legalising abortion and making it more easily accessible, we need to provide better choices and more support for women with unintended pregnancies.

Every child has a right to live. We need to focus on protecting the most vulnerable among us instead of making it easier to end lives.

Support for mothers is what we really need, not more abortions. This is wrong and flies in the face of what most people here actually want.

THESE GUIDELINES ARE A DISGRACE. How can they just change the rules like this without asking anyone? Stop this now.

So sad to hear about this. Babies deserve a chance at life.

Total madness. The law is clear enough as it is. They are just trying to push an agenda through the back door and hope we dont notice.
