Protect the Integrity of the Repertoire Program Courses in Secondary Schools in the Peel Board

Who can make a difference: Parents of current Cawthra and Mayfield students and former graduates by contacting the director & superintendents of the Peel Board. This petition may be signed by supporters who oppose the changes and who would like to voice their opinions in a respective manner to try and negotiate a resolution to benefit all parties involved.
(Cawthra/Mayfield) graduates and current students, teachers, and parents feel strongly about the changes being imposed on the repertoire program. Much outcry has occurred concerning the changes which will erase the benefits that past students have enjoyed, as well as eliminate the experiences past students have had in these courses. Whether students pursue their major or not at university/college, the experiences and skills gained by participating in these repertoire courses are an invaluable part of growth. These high-skill level courses should not be open to just anyone. Over the years, repertoire has earned an outstanding reputation and has developed a sense of pride that will no longer exist with the changes imposed upon the program. Therefore, it is illogical to change a system that has worked for 25+ years without fail, and has offered exceptional opportunities to students that carry onto the future.

I really thought this might just fizzle out but seeing how many people care about the Cawthra and Mayfield programs is honestly overwhelming (and honestly kind of makes me tear up a bit). It feels like everyone is finally waking up to what we are losing here and I am just sitting here staring at my screen in total shock at the energy behind this.

I was apart of the dance repertoire during my grade 11 year and it was such an amazing experience! I would have for future students to miss out on such an amazing opportunity and experience.
Repertoire ensembles are an important part of growing involvement and love for the arts at these Peel Schools. They motivate students to set higher standards and goals for their creative development and artistic discipline. During my time at Cawthra Park, repertoire courses greatly enhanced the Regional Arts Program and my betterment as a musician.
The reputation and quality of repertoire courses depend on auditioning the finest musicians in the regional arts program. This is the reason they are able to produce such a unique, mature sound. If opened up to everyone these choirs and bands will lose the very quality that distinguishes them from other non-arts high schools. The reason these students are at a RAP school is to learn professionalism in a music environment - in the real world there are auditions, and entry into ensembles is reserved for the best musicians, not first come first serve. It is an injustice to the students of Cawthra and Mayfield to take away this real-life experience.
It's about putting the children first. They benefit so much from theses programs.
I was in the Dance Rep program in my grade 12 year. I was given opportunities I never thought were possible, and grew significantly as a dancer. Seeing that these may go upsets me. For a school that praises the arts, they should be keeping these important programs.
I've spend my 4 years of high school at Cawthra Park and the RAP program has helped me with my life. I am currently not majoring in music however, arts enriches student's life outside of school and once they graduate. People often comment that "Arts is a waste of money" well, if this is the case, I would beg to differ about all the positive benefits known about people who have artistic hobbies. Numerous studies have shown the positive benefits, psychologically about playing music, I did my final music ISU on this topic to bring awareness about why would should keep these programs within public schools. RAP taught me how to play music, but as a more important part, it taught me more life skills such as teamwork, collaboration, time management, and respect towards others and their opinions. These life skills can not be just implemented through "workshops" as arts is a subject area which takes practice and discipline, to re-iterate, a single one workshop does NOT help student gain these types of skills in comparison to 4 years of taking arts in high school. Keep these programs in these schools.

Do not dilute Repertoire which enriches/compliments the Arts Majors. Auditions are a must to diagnose skill sets in the Arts & for meaningful creative opportunities!!!!
