On the 30th of April 2023, New Zealand enacted a world-leading ban on the live export of cows, sheep, deer and goats by sea. This was a huge step forward in protecting animal rights and ensuring that decades of harm is not repeated. However, with the coalition Government coming into power in New Zealand this ban is being threatened and the restoration of this cruel industry is rising.
Transporting animals by sea is extremely stressful even when animals are on ships purposely built for livestock exports. Rough waters, lack of ventilation, and unhygienic living conditions cause immense stress, heat, injury, illness and even death. Even if the animals make it through the harsh transport conditions, they may be treated and killed in ways that are illegal in New Zealand. We want to do our part in protecting the ban.
