History can be neither rewritten or erased. The beliefs and ways of society back then were, considered the norm and despite how generations have changed...we cannot be held accountable for that now. History notes many things that were wrong, how many women were suppressed?, treated less than dogs? assumed fit only for bearing children, prostitution, raping? What about when the Irish community were less than a dog when they ventured abroad? NO, what happened in the past is not correct, but we have all evolved through time and hopefully will continue to move forward and learn, re educate and all feel as though we belong. Removing a statue does not erase anything and the reason for erecting these statues is not in celebration of what they got wrong, but how much they got right, influenced the future, put their home towns on the map as such...made a difference. Alive today, they would no doubt look back in horror as we do....but we cannot change that. All our historical landmarks are necessary for future generations. They spark a visit, a conversation, a Google search and they LEARN something, have an opinion, share it and discuss it. They educate themselves. Removing something just teaches the future us to to act with anger, violence and disrespect to get what you want.

“... every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
George Orwell, 1984
