We don’t have to agree with some of the things they are guilty of, but it was a different time and a different set of circumstances and values. Hopefully we can learn from their history and try hard to makes sure it is not repeated.

Tearing down statues and monuments will do absolutely nothing to solve any problems or change how people think but will stop people asking questions out of curiosity and finding out. To be better in the future we must understand our past. Tearing things down will lead to anger, division and potentially yet more racial tension and we certainly don't need more of that. Leave all our historic statues, monuments and buildings alone and instead determine to behave better, encourage peaceful discussion, and remember times were very different then, across the whole world, and they still are.

History needs preserving to show how far we've come
