The killing of badgers to combat bTB is utterly pointless as stressed by many eminent scientists, inhumane and financially intolerable. Vaccination is much less costly and undoubtedly more effective.

The pilot badger culls have been a failure; have resulted in the unnecessary killing of 940 badgers in West Somerset at an estimated cost of £4,100 per badger - £3,854,000. They will not have helped farmers with the problem of bTB in their cattle and have been divisive and split members of local communities.
Vaccinating badgers until cattle vaccination is a reality has none of these negative issues and there is a growing band of well trained, willing volunteer waiting to help.

Killing badgers will not stop the spread of bovine TB. It is a cattle problem.

The science is clear. Killing wildlife to control or eradicate bovine Tb in cattle will not work. Badger vaccination along with improved cattle testing, movement controls and bio-security is the only cost effective, humane and sustainable solution until the cattle vaccination is approved for use.

We expect South Somerset District Council to recognise the futility of culling badgers and the serious harm it is doing to local communities. As representatives of these communities the council can support farming and wildlife by vaccinating badgers on council owned and controlled land.
