Protect Small Medical Cannabis Cultivators
Santa Cruz County exists in the shadow of the powerful Silicon Valley, where hedge funds now stand ready to deploy enormous wealth to exploit our County’s nascent medical cannabis industry. While small medical cannabis cultivators employ local residents, buy from local vendors and serve local cannabis patients, “Silicon Valley Cannabis” will outsource cannabis jobs to non-residents, purchase from non-resident vendors, and bow to the needs of non-resident investors.
In response to a small but vocal faction of county residents, the Board of Supervisors proposes to amend the current Medical Cannabis Cultivation Ordinance so that, among other changes, medical cannabis cultivation would no longer be permitted on properties zoned Residential Agricultural, where most small cannabis cultivators now cultivate. The proposed amendment will shut out small cannabis cultivators, destroying not only their livelihoods but that of their employees, cause financial harm to local vendors, and obliterate the chances for the fruits of this fledgling industry to nourish our local economy. Silicon Valley Cannabis is coming whether we want it to or not, but outlawing small cultivators from pursuing a legitimate business will have the effect of strengthening the grip of the Silicon Valley on our County. When that happens, local control will be diminished and the Silicon Valley will rule the day. If you love rural Santa Cruz county culture, sign this petition to support small cannabis cultivators. .
Dear Mr. Coonerty, we the undersigned respectfully request you to protect the County’s small cannabis cultivators. Don’t give their livelihoods away to Silicon Valley Cannabis!
