In a recent survey of November, 2011- February 2012, 25.5% Redondo Beach tobacco retailers were willing to sell tobacco to under-aged teens. The rate for Redondo Beach is more than four times the rate of 5.6% found in the 2011 California statewide Youth Tobacco Purchase Survey. Tobacco Retailer Licensing, a measure that requires all tobacco retailers to have a license to sell tobacco and renew it each year, has been proven as an effective tool to reduce youth access to tobacco in many communities. In the city of El Segundo, the tobacco sales rate to minors dropped from 39% to 10% after the tobacco licensing laws were enforced, and in the City of Pasadena tobacco sales to minors from 20%-0%.
