These new changes are going to prevent so many children and adults from having the opportunity to learn to swim. Swimming is a life skill, not only is it fun and has health benefits but it saves lives. The council should provide the widest opportunity for as many individuals who want to learn to swim the opportunity to swim.

Completely disgusted at this discussion! Has any thought or consideration been put into this? My daughter attended 3 sets of council run swimming lessons. She managed to learn how to jump like a jumping bean, run like a running bean, wobble like a jelly bean. While she had a lot of fun she never achieved anything near a swim. She began private lessons with Elaine Cromie and immediately began to learn how to swim. Elaine is excellent with the children and managed to teach these children how to swim confidently. I am now faced with the prospect of telling my 6 year old that she won't be attending swimming lessons! The council run lessons do not run at times which suit us and even if they did the thought of queuing to secure a place is ridiculous! If the council can not provide enough lessons for the whole community, should they not provide support for those individuals willing to teach on a private basis. Is it not better for the council to get some revenue? Instead they would rather have an empty swimming pool? Would love to hear the rationale behind this decision.

I believe it is important to get babies and children to learn to swim from a young age, it encourages the development of our children and helps them build confidence and overcome fear in the water. It also allows them to develop social and sensory skills. I support private tuition and believe the residents of Down/Mourne should have the right to send our children to private lessons. The tutors are skilled and offer a high quality service. This is not something our leisure services currently offer for pre-school children and I believe it is better to have a private lesson with experienced staff.

My children in no way benefited from group lessons. Once they received private lessons they were confident swimmers and had a great rapport with their instructors.

Happy to support this petition and prevent the introduction of these charges. We should be assisting our children to learn to swim - not getting in their way.

totally support the removal of this silly pricing schedule that will prevent these lessons from taking place. The lessons are valued and are helping children to swim - which any local authority should be promoting!
