I TOTALLY noticed this this year. As a single mom, my child had nothing for me on Mother’s Day. I asked him, didn’t your class do anything for Mother’s Day and he said, no. I was completely shocked the school and class, in Qualicum school district did absolutely nothing for Mother’s Day for the entire school. So, in our home….my son went and wrapped shampoo and I opened shampoo for Mother’s Day. Lol. Thanks, Ministry of Education.

As both a Christian and a mother, I believe Mother’s Day and Father’s Day should be preserved in schools. Scripture teaches us to honour our father and mother, and in today’s world especially, children need traditions that reinforce gratitude, family connection, and respect for the people raising them. Inclusivity should not require erasing meaningful celebrations that matter to so many families. Simple accommodations can include every child without removing these days entirely. As a single parent, these school celebrations matter deeply because they help children recognize and celebrate the parent who consistently shows up for them.
