To the Gwinnett County Public Schools Board of Education and District Administration:

We, the students of GCPS, believe that every student has the fundamental right to learn in an environment free from fear and intimidation. Education is only possible when students feel safe, supported, and secure within their school walls. Recent events regarding federal immigration enforcement (ICE) in our community have created an atmosphere of high anxiety that deeply disrupts our ability to focus, learn, and succeed. This is not just a political issue; it is a matter of student well-being and academic equity.

To restore our sense of safety and ensure a productive learning environment, we specifically demand that the GCPS Board of Education adopt a formal ‘Safe Schools Resolution’ that includes the following:

  1. Strict Judicial Warrant Requirement: A formal policy prohibiting any federal immigration official from entering non-public areas of Gwinnett High Schools without a judicial warrant signed by a judge.
  2. Maximized Data Privacy: A commitment to never collect or share student or family immigration data with federal agencies unless explicitly required by a specific court order, utilizing the full extent of FERPA privacy protections.
  3. Campus as a Sanctuary for Learning: Formalizing district-wide protocols that declare all GCPS campuses as "Sensitive Locations" where education is prioritized over federal enforcement actions.
  4. Student Support Resources: The allocation of specific counseling and mental health resources to support students experiencing trauma or high anxiety related to local immigration enforcement.

We ask our leaders to stand with their students and demonstrate that in Gwinnett County, our education comes first.
