We demand that the USDA follow the law as it is written in the Organic Food Production Act. We demand that the USDA stop certifying as organic all hydroponically-grown fruits and vegetables . This is being done to the advantage of huge corporations and at the expense of small family farmers and caring eaters. Today, cheaply-produced, non-organic food grown in industrial factories is flooding the market under the USDA organic label. As America loses the soil-based organic growers, they are losing the real alternative to the conventional-industrial production. Organic farming is based on building greater life in complex soil systems. It is not based on replacing all natural nutrition with fertilizers coming out of a bag. The USDA is damaging trust in the seal by allowing such produce to be called organic.

The feedback from small family farmers continues to underscore how much is at stake regarding the integrity of our organic standards. I am currently organizing a formal presentation of these concerns to the regulatory officials responsible for oversight. We must remain firm in our insistence that soil-based agriculture remains the only true definition of organic production.

USDA needs to relook, rework, and specify exactly what a hydroponically grown plant process needs to meet The Organic Food Production Act. Without precise guidelines and enforcement the public is being lied to through their labeling at the markets.
I thought organic certification was for crops naturally grown in soil. This certification is another compromise of those standards to benefit corporate growers at the expense of small farmers. Why does USDA have it in for the people? What a cesspool.
It's not possible to have the biome needed for healthy and nutritious crops in hydroponics. The organic movement has always been to preserve food the way Nature, not man, intended. Changing this is stripping us of a fundamental human right
Hydroponically-grown produce makes a travesty out of the description "organically grown." We have only scratched the surface of learning about the importance to our health of micro-organisms in the soil, which hydroponics doesn't allow.
I must eat chemical-free food to stay healthy, due to past chemical exposure. I depend on the NOSB to protect me from CAFO production, hydroponics and imported food that is not actually organic. Please do this this for me and every American.
Love organic screw the government trying to poison us.
Keep organic food organic! Hydroponics don’t get an exception!

As a certified permaculture designer and former president of the board of NOFA-NJ, I have witnessed the slow dilution and denigration of the true meaning of organic by BIG business and the USDA. So glad to support the Real Organic Project.
