As a west country artist who exhibits in North Somerset can I point out how damaging to the tourism industry these badger culls have been? Not only will they not work but they have harmed the image of North Somerset badly, and have fractured the communities where the culls have been held. The Welsh Government discovered how harmful to tourism their proposed badger cull would be, and decided to opt for vaccination instead. Now the visitor numbers to Pembrokeshire are higher than they were before, all because the public have voted with their feet and taken their holidays there. It isn't too late to repair some of the damage wrought by these insane and inhuman badger 'culls', by using the large pool of volunteer vaccinators already in Somerset to protect your remaining badgers from bovine TB, at far less financial and social cost.

Badgers play such an insignificant part in btb transmission that wholesale slaughter is not the way to go. Policing costs have made culling hugely expensive in both money terms and the reputation of British farmers. Vaccination is far more cost effective and removes badgers from the equation while the farming industry addresses the main problem of cattle to cattle transmission.

Having read extensively on the subject and studied wildlife all my life I passionately believe that vaccination is the only way forward. At the age of 65 it has taken the otter my entire lifetime to make a tenuous recovery from the sort of persecution that badgers are currently suffering.
