Doing a PhD already sets you back financially relative to ones peers and puts you into a very uncertain job-market position afterwards (and what with having to fork out between 1000 and 2000 euros for your defence, bookprinting etc.). To then also make it a non-salaried position (scholarship) with no build up of VW and no pension is scandalous. It will mean PhDs are only really feasible for a financial elite. I think this will seriously undermine the close working links between PhDs and their departments as wages are an important part of how we measure how we are valued by an organisation.

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek is een peiler van onze samenleving. De samenleving hoort die te waarderen. De beoefenaars dienen bijgevolg zodanig beloond te worden dat ze zich niet hoeven te bekommeren om hun bestaan., nu en later.

From a foreigner, the system of dutch universities is really attractive. Actually a few students in Japan will not pay attention to the Dutch universities when I decided to go to the Netherlands. However, they'll be really surprised how the Dutch government cares PhD students very well. In US and my country, Japan, the scholarship will be provided to a very limited students who will obtain PhD degree. Full financial and social support to PhD student like Dutch universities is very exceptional, which will be attractive to more talented students and push the Dutch-universites top-qualities. During four years as my PhD student, I really thanks Dutch government and universities to help me a lot from the academic and financial perspectives. I strongly believe this system will keep the top-qualities of dutch universities.

Ik was niet gaan promoveren als er geen salaris tegenover had gestaan en ik denk met mij vele andere. Ik verwacht dat door dit plan de wetenschappelijke output in Nederland enkel verder zal dalen.

This "experiment" will discourage people with scientific talent from becoming scientists. The Netherlands is one of the few countries that PhD candidates are treated as employees. I sincerely hope that they don't lose this title!

het doorvoeren van dit plan is zowel ontmoedigend voor masterstudenten om een phd te beginnen, als destructief voor de kwaliteit van het opleidingstraject. de promovendus wordt een melkkoe; de universiteit ontvangt immers nog altijd €92.000 per afgeleverde phd, maar het kost ze minder. gevolg: meer promovendi en minder begeleiding!
