as a employee,it is an honour and furthermore motivates your research with high enthusiasm. As a student, otherwise, you will feel you are just spending 4 years to finish some homework. You may decrease your active because most of the time you are told to do sth instead of coming up ideas by yourself.

PhDs are living a hard life already, please don't push us to hell!!!

I came to the Netherlands specifically because of the employee status that PhD candidates enjoy here. Reducing the status of PhDs from employees to students will undervalue their work in both research and teaching dramatically.

Treat hard working academics with the respect they deserve

It is unfair to turn PhD candidates into students. They do hard work. They produce a book & articles, teach students, organize meetings and, yes, sometimes, learn themselves in study groups. But they are not comparable to a first-year student. In fact, they are comparable with 'junior' positions or 'trainees' in business. These positions are paid. It is illogical and nonsensical to stop paying PhD candidates when they are full employees of the university, get responsibility and act as such, especially in the final stages of their PhD.
