Promote Peace, Prosecute Terry Jones
While burning texts may be constitutionally legal, Dove World Outreach's Pastor Terry Jones threatens to create panic and disorder by burning the Quran. Such consequences have already been apparent in Kabul when a United Nations compound in Mazar-i-Sharif was attacked. Twelve casualties are an early indication of the consequences of allowing such acts to continue in the United States. Allowing such spectacles to occur without prosecution is tacit approval of his incitement of hatred. The social and political consequences of such incendiary tactics are well known. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and General David Petraeus have condemned the actions and have warned of diplomatic and damaging political fall out such actions will cause. Such actions also convey a message that Muslims are not tolerated in the fabric of American society.
