As the recent Chinese New Year festival proved, a block party can be a positive and constructive event. Venues and businesses cater to the community and it's a shame that public servants aren't keen on encouraging festivals like 2013's Smith Street block party, which did more for the denizens of the Chinatown community than a few barriers (that block bus stops). A mellow vibe, some music and a few independent vendors can make a difference in an afternoon. Imagine what more events like that could do for the entirety of Honolulu. It would be a shame to see further restrictions placed on block parties in the future.
