In regards to SPLOST... SPLOST, the 2% additional sales tax imposed by county board, goes to Cobb County. 1% goes to Cobb Schools, and 1% for various projects for things like transportation, public safety, support services, and public services. For the 2016 year, Cobb County plans to spend a mere 3% of their SPLOST money on the "Austell District" (one of six said "districts"), in which Pebblebrook High School is located. Districts like Marietta and Smyrna receive more than a quarter of funding each, Marietta at 32% and Smyrna at 29%. If $125 million in sales tax is raised (over 6 years) for the Cobb Schools SPLOST, $3.75 million of that would go to the Austell District Schools- over 6 years. That averages out to less than a million ($625K), for multiple schools, per year. The Marietta District would receive $6.7 million for schools per year. This uneven funding is the root of Austell's perception and our issue.
The District of Austell is commonly percieved as "ghetto," "underprivileged," and a "slum city." By cleaning up Austell district's schools (which includes 2 high schools, many middle schools, and a handful of elementary schools), we could clean up the perception of South Cobb/Austell as well as the county in general. We are only as strong as our weakest link. Yes, we are weak in funding, but we are not weak in potential.
The heart and pride of Austell District schools is the Performing Arts Magnet located in Pebblebrook High School. Nearly 400 students travel hours per day to attend this program- whether they study Vocal Music, Drama, Dance, or Technical Theatre. The program that is in most need at the moment is technical theatre. Singing, dancing, and acting do not require adequate space. The art that is technical theatre requires resources- resources that we as a magnet are lacking. This is a serious matter to bring attention to, as many of the Cobb county high schools have a new theater built for them with new equipment that they're unable to comprehend to the extent and usage we do.
