I am sorry life is not fair. Maybe the writer of this got to many participation truphy as a child. It's very simple why should schools that excel at sports be penalized because it is private. It's a sad day in America. Are we not free to excel in this country. Sad sad sad

it is unfair that were not all private or not all public because of that only a few teams dominate.

Jason I like your post but it still doesn't address the dominance of some public schools in athletics such as West Lyon football, Dike New Hartford volleyball, Akron Westfield softball, Iowa City West basketball, etc. Would they also be moved up a class since they have consistent success. As I stated previously, I am against recruiting, and Western/Unity don't do it. Are other successful public school programs also going to be moved up a class. The other question is since I haven't seen evidence of private schools being successful in every sport, only a select few, do you move up the entire school a class? If that is done, it would be very unfair to the kids who participate in a sport that is already struggling in its current class. Example: Western Christian only had 5 kids out for wrestling. It would be unfair to move them up a class because the basketball teams have done well. Same goes for baseball, softball, soccer, golf, football, etc. It would be very unfair to punish the participants in those sports just because basketball/volleyball has had success. No doubt our basketball and volleyball programs could move up and be competitive but our other athletic programs would be at a huge disadvantage.

As stated earlier private schools make up 13% of all high schools in Iowa. I went to the Iowa Boys and Girls Athletic websites. There are 10 sports listed for girls and 11 sports listed for boys. I counted the team state titles and came up with 38 out of 42 girls teams winning state titles in the past 12 months being public schools. This gives private schools a win percentage of 9.5%. I counted 33 out of 37 teams titles for boys being won by public schools. Combine them and you get 71 out 79 state team titles going to public schools and a private school win rate of 10%. Explain to me again Shaelyn Adams what a huge unfair advantage private schools have.

Brady, I agree that if a school recruits it is unfair. I would be completely against it, as would all Western and Unity fans. Since we don't recruit we certainly don't want to play against schools that do. However, your ascertion that public schools don't recruit is inaccurate. I can name you multiple public schools in NW Iowa that have "magically" received open enrollment students that fit a need for their football and basketball programs. These open enrollments led to trips to state and state titles. How do you intend to deal with this problem? The proposal stated on the original blog is to punish schools like Western and Unity for their success which was hard earned through athletic dedication and excellent coaching while giving a free ride to public schools who did receive students through open enrollment STRICTLY for the purpose of athletic competition. The original post was about fairness. How is that fair?
