WHAT HAPPENED?

In March 2015, Democrat County Executive Rushern Baker proposed $130 million in numerous new taxes including raising our county’s property tax rate to the highest in the entire Washington DC Metropolitan region -- even though we already pay the 2nd highest in the State of Maryland. The PGGOP organized a grassroots effort against the proposed property tax increase and in response, the County Council rejected the majority of Baker’s proposal but still passed a 4% property tax rate increase.

SO WHATS THE PROBLEM NOW?

The power to raise property taxes in Prince George’s County does not belong to the County Executive or the 9-member County Council. Our County Charter explicitly gives that power to the over 800,000 Prince Georgian residents. Section 818 of our county charter, also known as TRIMM, requires the voters to approve any property tax increase beyond 96/100 per $100 assessed value. The County Executive and County Council decided to ignore our County Charter and the will of the people and force upon residents and businesses a massive tax increase. This is unacceptable because many county residents are struggling with foreclosures, recovering from the “Great Recession” and the average home value in the county is still $100,000 lower than pre-2007 mortgage crisis levels. We must remind our current elected officials — all Democrats — that they work for the people and not the other way around!

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

Your Prince George’s County Republican Party has been conducting extensive research into potential legal action against the County Council to protect taxpayer rights and prevent our abusive elected officials from unlawfully increasing our property taxes. If you agree with thousands of your fellow Prince Georgians that the County Executive and County Council should respect residents, follow our County Charter, and bring their proposed property tax increase to voters to decide, then we need your to support!
