Primates are created by GOD, and have been granted the inalienable rights to be treated humanely and mercifully, and to not be forced to endure excruciating pain in horrific experiments, nor to be housed in tiny, often-times filthy enclosure for extended periods of time.

terrible mistake

NHP work should be assessed by experts under the new EU Directive.

I have two EU grants using NHP and many partners involved in Europa. I am the only one having the right to use the NHP model... How could I achieve my work and the works of other partners if rules are changing now when we begin these two EU networks!!!

Leave decisions to professionals and do not put individuals above the law

We should welcome as much animal research as possible into the EU, because that will promote welfare standards for the work that will otherwise be undertaken somewhere else in the world.

Addiction is a brain disease. Humane research using nonhuman primates is crucial so that we can better understand diseases and develop more effective treatments. This is particular true for brain diseases.

This proposal will be unduly restrictive and will retard research and scientific progress in EU countries.

Advances in medical treatment depends on thoughtful experiments in comparative species.

It is irresponsible to take new drugs and treatments into humans without having done any testing on non human primates. Otherwise I do suggest that everybody who is against the use of primates is either not taking any kind of medicine or vaccination or treatment unless they have volunteered for at least one first in man trial.

Primate research is essential for translational research, even if not nice and emotion-raising. Those of us working with rodents know how dfficult it is to translate our research (evolutionary distance, social organization etc). Current legislation is already highly restrictive, even for non-primate species. Are these laws not at odds with the EU's drive for more and better RTD? Certain controls are needed and have introduced "best pratcice" across the research scene. However, most scientists are responsible; at least physiologists and behaviourists know that animal health and welfare are reflected in experimental outcomes. But perhaps we aren't communicating with politicians and the public sufficiently?

Given the huge impact that scientific research on non-human primates has on understanding of basic physiological processes and on ability to treat a number of illnesses, it will be unethical to put more restrictions on research on non-human primates. Out techniques have now progressed to a stage where it is possible to gather fundamental and important data on crucial issues with very little or negligible pain or distress to the animal. The conditions under which they are kept and used for experiments have also improved vastly almost everywhere around the world. I strongly entreat that the proposed changes for making research on NHPs more restrictive are withdrawn. Professor Trichur Vidyasagar.

This research is not only essentially for basic scientific discovery, but also research that can cure diseases and address public health crises.

I support this petition to cause the Belgian Government to think again about this measure, which will be an interference with properly conducted, ethical research.
