Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the fire service. A large majority is due to the carcinogens that remain in the turnout gear after running a fire call and the ones let off by the exhaust system on the trucks inside of the fire station. There are so many new technologies available to fire departments though. That is the reason my team has created this petition. We live in a county that only has one gear washer. For some of the firefighters in the county, that special washer is half an hour away, and they may not have the time to make that errand. This means that the carcinogens picked up from the last fire they ran will remain in their turnout gear until they have that time. These washers have a large cost associated with them since they are made specifically for fire gear, which is why we need your support to convince the county to invest in AT LEAST one or two more. Also, as mentioned before, another cause of cancer in the department is the exhaust system on the trucks. Diesel exhaust extraction systems are now available to prevent this. Two of these systems are Plymovent and MagneGrip exhaust extractors. They are giant hoses that firefighters connect to the exhaust pipe on each of the trucks. That way, the carcinogens are extracted without making their way into the clean air in the stations. Only one of the stations in our county has this technology. My team and I would love your support to help us put these in each of our stations as well as the gear washers. By signing this petition, you can help us prevent cancer in the fire departments. Thank you!

I keep thinking about the crews coming back from calls covered in toxic soot and having nowhere safe to clean their gear. The silence from the county leaders is frustrating but it only reinforces that we have to keep pushing for these exhaust systems and washers.

Seeing this level of support for my brothers and sisters in the fire service is overwhelming. Knowing that so many of you care about keeping our firefighters safe from these preventable toxins gives me immense hope for our next meeting with the county board.

Exhaust systems are a must. Keeping the station clean is basic safety. Hope the county wakes up and does the right thing.

Too many guys are getting sick. This equipment should have been standard issue years ago. Glad someone is finally pushing for it.

Thank you for doing this. It needs to be priority! I have wanted both of the items mentioned and always told it's too expensive. Well there are grants out there to help with cost but that has to come from admin.
