Prevent Imposition of Language on Non-Native People in Karnataka
As a non-Kannadiga, I moved to Bengaluru with the comfort of speaking my native language--Hindi. Karnataka, especially Bengaluru, has been a metropolitan region that has welcomed all kinds of people from across India, each bringing with them their unique languages. This diversity is what makes Bengaluru vibrant and dynamic. Yet, the language barrier forces a stark divide between locales and immigrants, subsequently influencing their social and professional lives.
The imposition of the local language on non-local people can exacerbate the cultural chasm. According to a survey by the India Inclusion Foundation, nearly 68% of non-Kannadiga respondents found it difficult to adapt to their surroundings without a proficient understanding of the local language.
We are not advocating for the eradication of the native language; on the contrary, we appreciate and respect the richness and cultural significance of Kannada. However, focusing purely on Kannada could alienate those who are not fluent.
With the diversity and fluidity of a metropolitan city like Bengaluru, it is important to ensure that language doesn't become a barrier but remains a tool of connection and understanding. This is the cosmopolitanism that Bengaluru has always been known for and must strive to uphold.
We request the local administrative bodies of Karnataka to create an inclusive environment where the local language is not imposed on non-native speakers. Let's prioritize understanding over division, unity over barriers. Please sign this petition to make our voices heard.
