The wearing of blinders by a few powerful will only stall effective changes until it is too late for the less fortunate residents. Change can be scary, but not as much as being underwater.

These common-sense goals are an important piece of the puzzle to protect the Mystic River Watershed, an area encompassing 4 towns and 2 Tribal Nations. The Zoning Commission should update their regulations to spell out how to accomplish these goals. Why? Under the current system, for example, new development can cause neighbors to be flooded; standing water, which is excellent for breeding mosquitoes, to be created; and vernal pools, which are breeding sites for the mosquito-eating tree frogs and salamanders, to be destroyed. Improved regulations can prevent these and other problems from negatively, impacting the health, welfare, and enjoyment of our communities.

Development without consideration of the real, current effects of climate change and the increased probability of extreme weather events is the antithesis to municipal planning. Floodwater doesnt care about future projected budgets, and new buildings that are underwater bring no future tax revenue. A realistic and wholistic approach to planning that includes buffer zones, wetland areas, and open green spaces are the only responsible way to account for sustainable development moving forward
