- The rate of fires caused by solar systems is increasing (36% for the most recent year)
- Infrared (IR) imaging is a proven means of prevention
- APS employs IR imaging on their expensive utility solar sites but not the systems they installed on low-income housing in wildfire prone regions such as the City of Flagstaff
- We'd like support petitioning APS to have our company (Higher Powered, LLC.) do IR imaging and preventative maintenance for 2250 residences for a four-year pilot program in order to provide industry with a sufficiently large dataset to inform decision making.
- Objectives would be to collect data, and following analysis and peer review (3rd party lab or university), provide answers to (publish) the following questions:
1. Where in a system are faults that cause a fire occurring?
2. How often are safety defects occurring?
3. How effective is a residential maintenance program that includes infrared imaging?
4. What's the fiscal impact to homeowners with solar to have annual preventative maintenance?
O&M of electrical systems is highly critical for the safe and reliable use of electricity. Proper O&M practices are essential. Unfortunately, there is a general lack of awareness and implementation of O&M plans for residential systems. APS should conduct this study to provide the public with a large data set that can be used to help create a national standard for residential O&M practices that includes infrared imaging inspections.
