We urge the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to deny developing nations ability to host the Olympic Game’s. By allowing these nations to host the Olympics, it encourages them to spend billions of dollars on facilities that will eventually fall into disuse.

Many renowned economists have studied the rise and fall of economies after a country hosts the games and have seen enough to develop a theory called the “Olympics Curse”. This “curse” causes a dip in Gross Domestic Product or GDP for the host country, which is an extremely negative impact on developing countries. Not only is it irresponsible for these countries to attempt to host Olympics because of the potentially great negative impacts, it is negligent for them to spend billions of dollars on major sporting events instead of providing basic necessities to their citizens.

This money that is being poured on the Olympics could be better spent on things such as education, health, public safety, transportation and infrastructure. By limiting who can participate in the Olympics, hopefully governments will be more interested in developing their economies first before attempting to make more
