Mr. Brydges, I feel your frustration. I want to support Lynnhaven River Now's efforts to make the Lynnhaven a cleaner, more enjoyable river for years to come, but I find it difficult to get an objective, fair ear from anyone in authority about the issues recreational boaters and homeowners face. I don't know if I'd call them dishonest, but they do seem to support oysters anywhere and everywhere at any cost without any regard or care for the negative impacts on people who live on and enjoy the river. It's as if some folks over there think folks who live on the river are "the problem" and should move their homes, which is ludicrous talk.
Instead, I'm considering supporting the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The people I've spoken with who represent Hampton Roads seem genuinely interested in hearing both sides. Additionally, I am a proponent of sanctuary oyster reefs, instead of any kind of commercial oyster business, in high density boating and residential neighborhoods.
I hope you can make the next Oyster Study Group public meeting on Friday, July 1 at 9:30AM at your favorite place, Lynnhaven River Now Brock Center. While your there, maybe speak to Christy Everett, Hampton Roads Director of the CBF.

I am not against oyster farming, but I am against commercial aquaculture farming in the waters of the Lynnhaven Estuary adjacent to heavily populated residential properties which also have been used for decades by local citizens and tourists for recreational purposes.

These leases were pushed through in a very underhanded and nefarious way. Unlike the open and clear public notifications that property owners have to go through for a pier or bulkhead - these commercial oyster operations did not follow the same open and clear notifications to these property owners. We will never support the "Lynnhaven River Now" organization again as they were also behind this campaign to hoodwink these property owners. "Lynnhaven River Now" is a very dishonest organization and should be shut down and never receive another dollar from anyone.

There must be a limit and process these greedy oysterman must go through. They shouldn't be able to put the cages around tight channels and residential areas. Also they shouldn't be allowed in high boat traffic areas

Linkhorn Bay, home to two large sanctuary oyster reefs, is not suitable for commercial oyster operations of any kind, due to the high density of homes and high numbers of recreational users of the waterway. Such a conflicting mix of uses would create safety and security issues for citizens. Large buffers and set asides need to be established to safeguard residential property and recreational users of the river. Commercial oyster operators should have places to work their business far away from homes and recreational boaters, and sanctuary oyster reefs should be buffered to protect them from poachers.

Oyster cages have their place - but it's not where there's a large population of recreational boaters and it's not right in front of people's homes on the waterfront!
