Preserving these packing houses will create another destination point for our community. It will attract people to Azusa with the Gold Line’s easy access and the new Laemmle Theater. It will help bring new business to our city while at the same time preserving the cultural and historic aspects of Azusa. Other cities have made an effort to preserve their packing districts like Claremont and Anaheim. These have become successful ways to acknowledge the past while at the same time grow the future.
With new housing built daily in the Rosedale community, the last thing Azusa needs is to add more townhomes that are financially beyond the reach of many of our current population. There are plenty of industrial or commercial tracts in the city where housing can be built. Why not preserve what we have instead?

I pass these historic packing houses all the time and wonder why the City has not done something to preserve them for our community, especially in light of the new Transit development. The only ideas the City seems to have are more and more townhomes. Azusans deserve better than that. Visit Claremont's award-winning Packing House or Santa Anita mall's Packing House-themed food court for some inspiration.
