Statement from Progressive Historic Preservation Professionals on the Election

As a preservation professional for 39 years, I'm glad to stand with a profession that honors the full spectrum of this country's history--good and bad, easy and difficult--and those who have important stories to tell.

It is a great petition in the whole and I have signed it. Just a couple of things to say though....I see Trump's taste as a kind of bad Soviet neo-classical kitsch....with a fondness for some absolutist architectural motifs! All that gold....I do care what he does to the Old Post Office and to the White House, for that matter. I did read that Trump is invested in PayPal which is managing donations to iPetitions. I worked in historic preservation for 30 years, as a public historian.

High time preservationists speak out for the critical interests of too often overlooked publics and places in the worrisome period ahead.

Have the "cry-rooms" all closed down? Apparently, there are some who are still taking it awfully hard. You'll come to love President Trump. If not, there's always the rest of the world!

Couldn't be more proud to sign this. The United States is a country for all of her citizens, and the Preservation profession has a duty and obligation to stand up against those that would seek division and hate.

I am a young professional in historic preservation and I work on behalf of everyone in this country, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, or any other factor. As professionals in the field of history, we know that America is not, nor has it even been, the "great," whitewashed society of Trump's imagination. I pledge to spend my career telling the stories that he and his administration want to stifle. I pledge to make my work inclusive and fair. I pledge to work to build people up, even when the world wants to break them down. I pledge to listen to others when they speak and be empathetic. I pledge to do my best to inspire others to do the same.

it is important to be inclusive in funding any and all preservation projects including those that highlight the history of people of color, gay and lesbian citizens and those who have been excluded because of heritage, religious beliefs or political persuasions...
