To Whom It May Concern,

Throughout EMT school, AMR was whispered as the gold standard of private EMS companies. You would be lucky to get a job with AMR, they all said. When many of us received our offer letters of full time employment with AMR, we all celebrated. However, to us AMR is the gold standard not because they operate nationwide, or that they have more contracts to run emergency services than any other private ambulance provider, but because they treated their employees well. Employees of AMR felt valued. It is reflected in the pride they take providing a life-saving service, whether responding to life-threatening emergencies or transporting patients from one health facility to another. We feel that same pride here in the Sutter IFT division, and we like to think that AMR cares for us in the same way. As such, We, the employees of AMR – Sutter IFT Division and members of AFSCME, would like to ask you to postpone the upcoming shift re-bid that includes Sutter IFT and Rural Metro Full time and Part time employees. As I’m sure you’ve heard from more than one employee, there is concern that there are not enough full time shifts available (specifically in the Sac/Pla/Yolo Tri-county area) to support current full time employees as well as part time employees who wish to become full time. The seniority list for the shift bid wedges currently part time employees in with Full time employees, causing a gap between available full-time shifts and the number of employees vying for the positions. This means that many employees hired full time may be either reduced to part time hours or must relocate to counties where they do not live. Besides the obvious cost of relocating to a new county, these employees would lose the working relationships and rapport that they’ve built little-by-little with the hospital staff, coworkers, and other health care providers along the way.

We trust that an amicable solution to this problem can be found - that enables Full-time employees to remain full time in their counties - while part time employees are recognized for their hard work to date. Already there is a rift forming between Part time employees and Full time employees due to this upcoming bid, a sentiment that can’t be allowed to continue. We are all on the same team, and this pits us against each other instead of bringing us together. Through the grapevine, we heard that the reason part-time employees are included in this shift re-bid is because there were mistakes made in scheduling and awarding shifts to part time employees. It would not be fair to Full time employees, who have put in so much time and effort working hard for AMR, to throw away the many months that they’ve invested and reduce their hours or force their relocation to areas they are unfamiliar with. With this petition, we ask that you hear our collective voices and either address this issue before the shift bid schedule in 7 days or postpone the shift bid until we can figure out a solution that keeps everyone happy.

Sincerely,

AMR Sutter IFT – Members of UEMSW-AFSCME Local 4911
