My phone has been buzzing nonstop since this morning and I am honestly reeling because I never imagined so many people would actually care about the printers. It really feels like the department is finally waking up to the fact that we are all struggling with these costs and I am just so grateful for the energy behind this right now.

I can see how the IoA may want to push further towards being green. But this is not about that. When things need to be printed by a student, it will be printed elsewhere on paper - and paper is paper. The only difference charging will have is that you are stealing away the most basic facility that a student can have at a university. Post-grads dont hardly use any facilities at all, pay extreme fees and have border-line breakdowns...so why add to the misery?
Already pay enough as an international student--you'd think some of my 15,000GBP would go to printing!
I may be finished with my thesis, but I'm on board. I never would have been able to afford to print my work if I'd had to pay for every sheet!
having spent 4 years using allotted isd orinring services, I can attest to the fact that it is not nearly enough to cover what is required. This is more an exercise in money grubbing and centralized control than anything hing else. The fee structures already push the limits of international and UK/home student resources. We are fast approaching a tipping point at which the ability to attract high quality students who are not independently wealthy will have been a compromised without the possibility of repair.
The cost of printing and binding a PhD thesis (2 Viva copies plus at least another 2 copies for final submission) is already massive. If you add to this printing costs as well - I think UCL will see the quality of their final submissions go down.
What is the UCL offering for the elevated fee that we pay? Not only they intend not to provide a basic service but they want to make a benefit (another one) from us. Simply intolerable
I signed the petition although I think it might be a futile attempt, because if UCL does allow IoA to retain the free printing rights for its postgraduate students, it will be under pressure from postgraduates students from other departments to be granted the same privilege. What I would like to suggest is perhaps for the IoA to offer small hardship grants (perhaps from the savings of offering free printing in the past) to students who are struggling with living expenses, to help them cope with the impact of losing the privilege of free printing.

I am a self funded full-time student, doing three jobs (include post-graduate teaching assistant) to pay my fee and to "live" in London. Should I really pay for printing papers for my research (that I am ALREADY paying) or handouts for students?
