National sovereignty and freedom of religion, speech, and culture are two very different matters. Thus, they should be treated separately. If the flag had been displayed solely in the Tibet Week as a pure cultural gesture, it might have been legitimate in the cultural realm. But if it is to be displayed for an entire year with all other national flags, it is a political gesture that violates China's sovereignty. As a higher education institution, Emory should maintain its political neutrality and respect national sovereignty.
