As a student at DTSD, I protest this policy. School will be rather boring and inpersonal, and I'd MUCH rather have a nice school community. What happened to "Oh teachers, foster relationships with your students" at the beginning of the year?

Connections with teachers are key to success inside and out of the classroom. They haved proved to be excellent role models in the past and currently for me personally.

Students should be allowed to interact and be friendly with teachers, in an appropriate manner. Restricting communication with teachers is pointless.

Teachers are an important part of any students life and this shouldn't be taken lightly.

While it is necessary to prevent inappropriate relationships between students and teachers this proposal seems to limit ALL relationships with teachers. Teachers are vital to the climate of Hershey High School and this will greatly upset the balance at our school.

I understand what the students are trying to preserve, but I moreso understand the streamlining and liability loss that this policy would acheive for the school district; something invalueable in today's process of being judged in the court of public opinion. The end result: Teachers stop developing personal relationships with students, and they can focus on the job they're actually paid to do: teach, and not babysit. Class sizes will only get larger as time progresses, and it will provide an applicable environment for students to acclimate themselves to what will be the next step for most of them: college. Any state university has classes that can range from 50 to 300+ students, and they no longer have the same amount of access to one-on-one relationships. This is preparing them for that. If you're worried about a teacher being able to connect with your child, perhaps more efforts should be made to connect with your child outside of the education environment? They're not being paid to mediate personal issues, provide advice on typical teenager problems, nor should they be required to take the time out of their already busy schedules and workload to focus on one student's problems. And the students aren't being ignored in that department, they're being redirected to a [hopefully] child psychology professional who is equipped to help the students deal with their issues. It's the 30,000 foot view that counts for the education system: its a parent's responsibility to get them through the other stuff. Quite honestly, I support the school district on this one.

Somehow, this would make school even worse than it already is.

This will create a stiffer environment. Students will not be as comfortable. Students cannot and will not learn as well in this environment. If a student has a problem and they cannot talk to a teacher that they are comfortable with and they are not comfortable with the guidance counselor, than their problems may escalate. The freedom of student-teacher interactions are a key part in an education. If students feel uncomfortable and cannot talk with who they need/want to, the learning environment will not be work. Teachers cannot right good college recommendations if they do not their students as well as they know them without this policy.

I'm signing this petition because I know how much having personal relationships built trust and respect in my children for their teachers over their years in the Hershey School system. Creating an environment where there is no shared joy, sorrow, dreams and expectations is not conducive to learning. Please allow your teachers to use their professionalism with your trust in them.

This sounds like an attempt to fix something that isn't broken. And, should it go through, will do much more harm than good. I agree with the current student body----we might as well buy robots to teach!

This is absolutely crazy! I graduated 21 years ago and many of my role models growing up were my teachers. Several of them have become and still are my friends. There are enough issues in today's society to take this away from our future!

As a teacher myself, I couldn't imagine removing the personal aspect from the classroom. Allow teachers to be role models and guides for their students. Teaching goes beyond the designated subject area.
