Police Need Better Training and More Repercussions !
Recently, an ongoing problem in not only the United States but also in Canada is that some police officers have been abusing their power, specifically towards black individuals. This problem in Canada is not as bad the reputation of police in the United Stated but it does not mean that this problem doesn't exist in our country. According to a Guardian Investigation, Black Americans are more than twice as likely to be unarmed when killed during encounters with police as white people. Guardian reports also found that 32% of black people killed by police in 2015 were unarmed. Steven Hawkins, the executive director Amnesty International USA, described the racial imbalance as “startling”. Hawkins said: “The disparity speaks to something that needs to be examined, to get to the bottom of why you’re twice as likely to be shot if you’re an unarmed black male.” Surveys were also conducted in the Department of Justice in the US and they found that "84% of police officers witnessed fellow officers using more force than necessary and 52% said that it is not unusual for a police officer to turn a blind eye to improper conduct of other officers." Individuals that have been killed over the few years because of racial profiling and police abusing their power are: Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Aiyana Jones, Rekia Boyd, etc. The scary thing is that the list continues and this problem could have easily been avoided. This protest is not to pick a fight and blame different groups of people but simply to find a solution. Most of these individuals were killed under stressful situations. Therefore, by signing this petition you agree with me that police officers need better training in dealing with individuals under stressful situations.
