Pokexit: Pokemon is not representing their global fanbase.
Pokemon draws from cultures & places from around the world.
Cofagrigus from Egyptians, Hawlucha from Latinos, Altaria from East Asians, Copperajah from South Asians, Comfey from Polynesians, Xatu from Amerindians, Bouffalant from Africans just as a few examples.
Yet most pokemon characters fall within a narrow appearance or phenotype: light skin, straight hair & refined features.
Even when a Pokemon region is
inspired and based on a real place like the Alola region in Pokemon sun and moon which is based on Hawaii/Polynesian culture there only two or three brown/bold characters included when many Polynesian have brown skin and bold features.
In all of the games in total around 1% of characters have afro/coiled hair, 2% have brown skin and 1% or less have bold/broad features (lips, noses, face shape).
These numbers are not reflective of the user base that support Pokemon. Can you sign the petition if you are willing to exit the Pokemon franchise and stop buying their products? POC have over 3.9 TRILLION dollars in buying power, can we show that?
