FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION - PLETTENBERG BAY - 16.12.2010
The Bitou Local Municipality has made a decision without public participation, that the Central Library is to be moved to New Horizons within the next 12 months; we understand that in that time a new library will be built in New Horizons at a cost of between R6m and R8m.
We the undersigned, strongly object to this undemocratic decision and wish for the Central Library to remain in the Plettenberg Bay Central Business District(CBD).
The Central Library has in excess of 10,000 members, and is used extensively by many members of every community. We fully support the existence of the new libraries in KwaNokuthula, Kurland, New Horizons and Kranshoek, and know that their membership, though small at present, will grow with time. We feel that the closure of the Central Library in Plettenberg Bay will spell the end of an informal yet intimate meeting-place, enjoyed by everyone who loves literature and reading, and is in accordance with our Government's new "coming together policy".
Our Central Library in Plett is the one Government amenity (apart from our schools), that brings people together from all communities. Let's not lose it. Please sign this petition, and forward it to as many people as you can.
