The Robert Morris University Men’s Cross Country and Track program is a fantastic program that doesn’t deserve the leave the University with such harsh notice. No good program should go down without a fight! The communications from the University implies that some of the criteria for eliminating teams include competitive success; academic success; and adequacy of facilities. As far as facilities, what runner or field athletes have you met that doesn’t do work outside? With that being said, what other team doesn’t use the benefits of an outdoor track in order to complete their workouts, as well as a community gain! The men’s cross country team displayed outstanding success on November 2, 2013 during the Northeast Conference Championships bringing back the second place trophy to RMU. With trophy in hand, two student athletes also brought home All-NEC honors. One of which also earned NEC Freshman of the Year. Unfortunately, successful student athletes such as these won’t be able to bring honors to RMU with the elimination of the program. The men’s track and field team has also brought honor back to RMU within the past year with extraordinary performances. These performances are not only reflect out on the field but also in the classroom. Competitive and academic success! A pair of track athletes earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors which means the student must compile a GPA of 3.25 and either A) be national ranked during the indoor season or B) participated in NCAA Division I Championships outdoor. The success of these two student athletes stretched between the indoor and outdoor season to reach such an honor. The above examples are just a few of the many recent accomplishments that have been made by this team. With such success and growing competitiveness within the conference, how can this program NOT be a NEC sport of emphasis? It would be such a shame to see such a growing successful program get shutdown in the middle of an amazing growth spurt. RMU XC & TF f
